MARRAKECH, NOV 18: As UN climate talks at Marrakech – COP22- comes to an end today, India’s minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Anil Madhav Dave said, “It would be unjustified to have expectation from COP22”.
Dave was satisfied with the talks, negotiations and discussion but had reservation to elaborate much as he reiterated India’s position and commitment to climate change even as fear looms large with speculation of US president elect Donald Trump pulling back from the historic “Paris Agreement”.
“It would be unjustified to have expectations from this COP on the lines of Paris, which was a mega event. But here all the countries sat together and have work the baseline for the implementation and more clarity would follow in the years to come”, Dave told this scribe.
The minister believes that 22nd session of conference of parties was “COP of action”, has set the ball rolling for global actions to combat climate change.
“It could not have been clear in just one COP. It will evolve gradually. The direction is right. Whatever issues India had to incorporate, they agreed to it. One word Sustainable development has also been included as part of actions”, the minister said.
Terming COP22 as successful, Dave said, “We are moving ahead in the right track. There were many attempts to drag it for various reasons. That did not happen and it moved forward on its track. This I consider as a success of Marrakesh. For us, we completed our International Solar Alliance (ISA). We should not see this as a standalone. It has moved on the right track”.
