SHILLONG, JULY 10: The Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA-II) government on Thursday constituted a committee responsible to identify the entry and exit points- the first phase towards a comprehensive mechanism to check and control inflow of illegal influx and immigrants into the state.

Chief minister Mukul Sangma told reporters after the meeting, “We have constituted a committee, which has been assign the task of identifying ideal locations for the setting up of the entry point and exit points in the state.”

The government’s decision came after its meeting with the 13 ngos on April 29 on the need to have a entry permission on the spot for checking influx into the state.

According to the chief minister while putting a comprehensive mechanism in place to address issue of illegal immigration and influx, it invariably requires filtering of people entering and exiting the state through the various entry and exit points.

The chief minister informed that the committee will be headed by Director of the Directorate of Anti-Infiltration and will be assisted by officers drawn from the departments of revenue, transport, tourism and labour.

The chief minister said, “The committee has been directed to complete the task within two months time.” He added that the committee will also look into the infrastructural requirements to be set up in these proposed entry and exit points.

The state government is also contemplating in making these proposed entry and exit points free from hassle for tourism.

The chief minister said,“We would like to assured that the model which we are looking at is being structured in such a way that there will be minimum inconveniences to the people as they enter and exit the state.”

According to the chief minister, there has been apprehension that people including bona-fide citizens of the state might be subjected to certain amount of inconveniences.

The chief minister further informed that the infrastructure and various procedures like scrutiny and verifying their credential will be structured in such a way that they are not subjected to inconveniences rather it should be attractive to people to stop in these points.

The points will segregate people like students, the tourists, professionals and those coming for various purposes and allow them for expeditious registration, checking and passing through entry and exit points.

The chief minister said, “ We will also look at other facilities from tourism point of view like aesthetic and comfort perspective. Even the waiting while verifying must be an attractive rather than a perceived bad experience.” – By Our Reporter
