Intensify patrolling to check boulders theft: KSU

IMG_9672SHILLONG, NOV 20: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South Central East Circle today submitted a petition before the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills District PS Dkhar for his intervention into the alleged stealing of boulders by Bangladeshi nationals.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, KSU-SCEC president Innocent Khongstia said, “The DC has assured the delegation to take up with the Border Security Force (BSF) and SP for immediate inquiry into the matter.”

He said that the delegation has also urged the deputy commissioner to request the BSF for intensifying patrolling in the areas which falls under Raid Lyngkhat and Raid Litting along the Indo-Bangla border.

“These areas especially Nongsohphan village are largely affected by the illegal activity wherein Bangladeshi nationals are stealing boulders from along the River Khasmar,” Khongstia said.

Asked, the union president said allowing the Bangladeshi nationals to commit theft along the border area will lead to soil erosion besides affecting agriculture produces.

He recalled that the rampant stealing of boulder stones from the River was to a great reduced after a similar petition was filed earlier in 2007 before the then deputy commissioner B Dhar.

Reacting to a query, Khongstia said around 30-50 Bangladeshi nationals are coming to the area everyday despite the presence of BSF personnel and carry the boulders by boats and trucks.

“Approximately 1500 tons of boulders are being illegally lifted from river because the BSF personnel are wasting their time in nabbing cattle smugglers instead of also addressing this serious problem,” he stated.
