SHILLONG, SEPT 12: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) asked the state government to put aside its ‘adamant attitude and immediately invite the teachers for dialogue taking into account the interest of the students’ community in the state.
Academic studies of school and college students from across the eleven districts of the state have been affected by the ongoing strike called by the teachers under the banner of the Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Associations of Meghalaya (JACATAM) from September 11 to 13.
KSU education secretary Donald V Thabah said on Thursday,“We urged the state government to address the grievances of the teachers by inviting them for talks.” He said that due to the unwillingness of the state government to have dialogue with the teachers the latter was forced to agitate which in turn has affected the students’ community.
According to Thabah, the government’s attitude only shows that it is shying away from responsibility towards the upcoming generation. Similarly, the government has even rejected the demand for the Inner Line Permit (ILP) which will protect and preserve the identity of the indigenous people, he added.
Thabah said if the government wants growth and development to come in the state it should attend to the demands put forth by the teachers even as he informed that the union extended its full support to the JACATAM on its issue.
The functioning of over 4047 schools under ad-hoc and deficit pattern across the state was stalled during the ongoing strike staged by the teachers. The strike is part of the fresh agitation of the teachers after the state government, especially the Deputy Chief Minister RC Laloo who is in-charge of education refused to call them for talks on their demands.
The KSU also demanded the immediate implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act to further improve the education and literacy rate in the state.- By Our Reporter
