Shillong, January 11: The  school teachers under the banner of the Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Association of Meghalaya (JACATAM) has set January 27  as a deadline for the government to invite them for talks to discuss the status of their demands that was put before the government..

The decision of January 27 to the government was taken during the meeting of the JACATAM on Saturday.

“We demand that the state government should call us for discussion on the status of our demands within January 27,” JACATAM president ED Nongsiang told reporters after the meeting.

Last year the teachers launched series of agitations protesting the nonchalant attitude of the Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo, holding education portfolio, and the state government towards their demands. The teachers agitation had affected the students community across the state.

The teachers under the JACATAM, a body of various teachers’ organizations, wanted discussion with the government on the provincialization of teachers’ services, education policy, issues relating to MBOSE, regular payment of salary beside others.

Nongsiang informed that the committee had earlier met the chief secretary WMS Pariat on the status of their demands. He said Pariat had assured that the government would find out ways and means to address the different issues put forth by the teachers and sought three months time.

Nongsiang said, “The three months time sought by the government has expired on December 31, last year and now, almost two weeks have passed but we are yet to get any communication from the government.”

Nongsiang warned that if the state government fails to invite the teachers for discussion within the deadline, the teachers will again sit and discuss on the next course of action which might be repeating the agitations like last year.- By Our Reporter
