JACATAM to intensify agitation

SHILLONG, APR 12: Leaders of the Joint Action Committee of All Teacher’s Associations of Meghalaya (JACATAM) today staged a one-day hunger strike in protest against the state government’s delay to implement the 100% salary enhancement to adhoc teachers.

“We will be compelled to intensify our agitation if the state government fails to implement this 100% salary enhancement to the adhoc teacherswithin one week,” JACATAM chairman ED Nongsiang told reporters at the sideline of the hunger strike protest held here near the All India Radio office.

Referring to the recent assurance made by the chief minister in the floor of the state Assembly that there will be 100% salary enhancement for all categories of teachers, Nongsiang said but there has been no action or approval to this decision by the state cabinet.

He said the JACATAM has been demanding salary enhancement for adhoc teachers of pre-primary, lower primary and upper primary schools which also include for hindi and 4^th teachers in the state.

“We want the state cabinet to immediately approve the salary enhancement with effect from September 2016,” Nongsiang said while informing that the government so far had completed enhancing the salary of only secondary and higher secondary adhoc schoolteachers.

According to him, the LP, UP, and hindi teachers are presently surviving with meager of salaries of Rs 6000, Rs 8000 and Rs 3500 respectively.

Meanwhile, the JACATAM leaders maintained that they would be compelled to call for a mass agitation which would be taken part by over 14,000 teachers.
