JH ngos take on ILP

SHILLONG, JULY 24: Imminent crack is apparent within the conglomeration of 13 pressure groups over the issue of influx with the Jaintia hills-based organizations on Thursday threatening to ‘disassociate’ themselves from the umbrella if the other groups choose to divert from the demand for the implementation of the Eastern Bengal & Frontier Regulation, 1873 (EBFR).

“If others (NGOs) choose to divert from the demand for the implementation of the EBFR, we would be compelled to take a decision even to the extent of pulling ourselves out of the conglomeration,” the presidents of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) and Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF), Rikut Parien and Poipynhun Majaw said in a joint statement issued on Thursday.

The JSU and JYF also maintained that they still stick to the demand for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to check unabated inflow of influx and illegal immigration into the state.

Their statement came in the wake of recent controversies over the issue of ILP and the stand of the 13 ngos who are now demanding implementation of the proposed comprehensive mechanism.

Stating that they have never abandoned the issue of ILP till today, the leaders said, “The two organizations are not aware and not part of any decision to demand for a different type of ILP which was reportedly called as modified or modern ILP,” adding “We are still sticking to the demand for ILP as per EBFR, 1873.”

It may be mentioned that at a meeting held on April 29, the thirteen ngos who were firm on their demand for the implementation of ILP earlier last year, have submitted number of points in their proposed comprehensive mechanism, which is ready to be implemented by the state government.

They further claimed that in the last meeting (April 29) with chief minister Mukul Sangma on the issue of ILP, all the 13 NGOs have never spoke or utter anything regarding a modified ILP in words or in writing.

“We totally denied of having signed any such agreement or proposals,” the two leaders said.

Interestingly, the two leaders from Jaintia hills further claimed, “Till today, we have not been part of giving any suggestions or proposals to the state government but to continue with the demand for the implementation the ILP in the state.”- By Our Reporter
