SHILLONG, JAN 11: Legislator Julius Dorphang, who has been accused of rape of a minor girl and arrested-has reportedly spilled the beans before the police investigation team of his involvement in the crime of 14-year-old girl.

East Khasi Hills District SP (City) Vivek Syiem claimed on Wednesday, “He (Dorphang) has been cooperating with the investigation team. He has admitted his involvement in the crime.”

The independent legislator from Mawhati was remanded to five days police custody soon after his arrest from an inter-state bus terminus (ISBT) at Gorchuk in Guwahati, Assam on Saturday last week.

“His remand to five days police custody will end tomorrow,” Syiem said while informing that police will accordingly produce the arrested MLA before the city court.

There is no indication on the part of the investigation team to pray for further custody of the rape accused.

When inquired, Syiem said, “We will immediately file our charge sheet against him at the earliest.”

At least two cases have been registered against the legislator, who is a former HNLC chairman, for his alleged involvement in raping the girl in areas falling under Laitumkhrah police station and Ri Bhoi district.

The sex racket came to light after an employee of a guest house owned by the senior Congress leader’s and home minister’s son was arrested for pimping the victim last month.

The victim was rescued from near the guest house and brought to the police station where she named all those involved in pimping her.

Along with Dorphang, altogether nine persons including five pimps have been arrested in the case based on the FIRs filed by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR).

Meanwhile, the state police have maintained that more arrests will follow as the investigation is on.
