Justice Thangkhiew takes oath as judge of Meghalaya High Court

SHILLONG, NOV 19: Senior Advocate Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew as judge of the Meghalaya High Court on Monday took oath of office as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court.

The oath was administered to Justice Thangkhiew by the Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob in the Chief Justice’s court room here.

Pursuant to the Supreme Court Collegium’s resolution in September this year, the Central government has notified the appointment of Thangkhiew as judge of the Meghalaya High Court.

Thangkhiew’s name has been notified by the Central Government through a Notification issued on Saturday.

Born on December 24, 1966, Justice Thangkhiew has completed his BA Hons (Economics) from North Eastern Hill University in the year 1987 and LLB from Delhi University in the year 1990.

Prior to his appointment as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, Justice Thangkhiew was enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in the year 1990-91 and later designated as senior advocate by the Gauhati High Court in August 2010.

He has practiced at the Gauhati High Court, Princiapal Seat, Guwahati and Shillong Bench presently the High Court of Meghalaya. Thangkhiew has mainly practiced in areas of Civil, Constitutional, Customary (Local Tribal) and Company Law.

He has also been a member of several organizations and institutions viz member of the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, member of Meghalaya State Bar Council under section 58 of the Advocates Act of 1961 and the member of the Meghalaya state Law Commission.
