SHILLONG, MAY 11: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has asked the Committee on Boundary Dispute (CBD), which was reconstituted today, to complete the process of collecting additional materials on lands within its jurisdiction which are falling under the disputed areas with Assam.
“We have revived the committee and has given it three months time to submit a report on the matter to the executive committee (EC),” KHADC chief executive member (CEM) Pynshngain N Syiem told reporters after a meeting of the EC held here on Friday.
He said the role of the committee would be to collect the more documents from the traditional heads and land owners to strengthen the Council’s claim over these lands. According to him, the role of the land owners is very crucial.
“Once all these are in place, we would tell the Assam government to respect our documents,” Syiem said.
The Council’s chief said that the executive committee will initiate steps and take a stand on the matter as waiting for the ongoing talks between the two states – Meghalaya and Assam may not bring any solution to the long pending problem.
Asked, he informed that the district council has compiled the documents in volume I and II which was done by the earlier committee on boundary dispute.
“We have also shared these documents with the state government but nothing was done till today,” he said
There are 12 areas of differences at present between Assam and Meghalaya. These are Upper Tarabari, Gizang Reserve Forest, Hahim area, Langpih area, Bordwar area, Nongwah Mawtamur area, Pilangkata Khanapara area, Deshdemoria area, Khanduli area, Umkhyrni Psiar area, Areas of Block I and Block II and Ratacherra area.
