KHADC chief HS Shylla quits active politics

SHILLONG, FEB 2: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief Hispreaching Son Shylla today finally announced his decision to quit active ‘politics’.

Shylla made the announcement after he was appointed as the full-fledged chief of the Ka Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SRKBH), a newly formed conglomerate body of the tribal clan elders, in its first general council meeting held in the city here on Saturday.

“I will no longer contest elections be it MDC, MLA or MP as I have decided not to go back to politics,” he told the gathering attended by elders of the different clans from Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.

Shylla, who is also sitting MDC of Nongkrem constituency, said that he had recently resigned from the National People’s Party (NPP) and he is also not interested to join other political parties.

After the meeting, the outgoing chief executive member told reporters that the January 31-Dorbah Bah held at Students’ Field, Jaiaw was his last public speech as a politician as he has finally decided to quit politics for good.

He said the allegation that he would be the MP candidate of the Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisations (CoHSO) was not true.

“I also want to make it clear that the Synjuk is also not a platform to further my political career,” Shylla added.

Shylla made a come back to politics after he was re-elected to the 29-member House during the 2016 bye-elections to the six seats in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

He has been opposing the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government for its indifferent attitude towards the various Bills passed by the KHADC which include implementation of inner line permit to check influx and illegal immigrants entering its jurisdiction.

Shylla said that he would focus on how to further strengthen body of clan elders (Synjuk) which aimed at taking up all issues concerning the indigenous people of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.
