KHNAM MDC candidate

SHILLONG, SEPT 26: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Monday announced its official candidate to contest from Laban constituency in the upcoming district bye-election slated in December. The decision was taken at the central executive committee (CEC) meeting of the party on Monday.

“We have finalized the name of Bankhraw Sing Kharbuli as our official candidate for the bye-election from Laban constituency,” KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum said after the meeting.

He, however, informed that the party is yet to finalize the candidates for Mairang and Sohiong constituencies. There were two applicants each from both the constituencies who are vying for party ticket.

“We will complete the process at the earliest,” Nongrum said.

Stating that the party aims at fielding candidates from all the seven vacant seats in KHADC and JHADC, Nongrum however said, “We have entrusted the matter to the election committee to decide on the remaining four constituencies which include one in Jaintia Hills.”

When asked, he said, “The party is trying to have a proper screening of candidates, who are expected to have a spirit of working for the interest and welfare of indigenous community.”

He added, “We don’t want people coming and misusing the party only as a platform.”

KHNAM also said the upcoming bye-election is crucial for the party keeping in view that other political parties have decided to resign and shy away from responsibilities at a time when the indigenous community is in crisis.-By Our Reporter
