KSU closed down centres

SHILLONG, JULY 25: Four ‘Aadhaar Centres’ were closed down by the KSU on Thursday as the government failed to respond to the union demand for putting on hold the nationwide exercise of data collection for the National Population Register (NPR).

The four centres closed down by the KSU are those located in Pine Mount, St Edmunds, Oakland and State Central Library.

The Aadhaar “Unique Identification Number” is a pilot project of biometric enrolment implemented in the state as part of the second phase of data collection for the National Population Register (NPR).

But the KSU had asked the state government to put on hold its implementation till the government put in place a proper mechanism to combat influx into the state.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem said, “We have closed down the centres because there was no involvement made between the different stakeholders before opening the centre.” He said the KSU had several discussions with the state government and the latter had assured that the plan will be halted.

According to Khyriem the implementation of Aadhaar centres will only facilitate “outsiders” to strengthen their claim of being genuine residents of the state. And, that is why the KSU has been demanding to first put in place a mechanism to control influx into the state.

Khyriem suggested to the government to invite views and opinions of people and stakeholders before going ahead with the implementation. He said, “Taking the views of the public into consideration is required.”

Earlier, chief minister Mukul Sangma had during the presentation of the NPR assured the civil societies that the government would soon notify designated traditional bodies to seek their involvement in the nationwide exercise in term of verifying both genuine and non-genuine citizens of the state.- By Our Reporter
