SHILLONG, APR 4: As part of observing the Khasi National Awakening Day, the Khasi Students’ Union on Wednesday put up a new signboard renaming the Lady Hydari Park as ‘Phan Nonglait Park’.

Phan Nonglait was the first Khasi woman who revolted against the British during the time of freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem between 1829 and 1833.

The action by the Union was after the state government failed to implement its own notification issued on September 11, 2001 for renaming the city park after Phan Nonglait.

Speaking to reporters here, KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar said, “We have not done anything illegal but the putting up of this new signboard is after the state government’s failure to implement its own notification for the past 17 years.”

Moreover, he said the inaction of the government is also seen as an attempt to deny recognition to this great tribal woman, who played a significant role in the fight against the British rule that time, and also disrespect to the indigenous community.

Along with the signboard, the Union has also pasted the September 11, 2001–notification approved by the Governor.

Asked, Marngar said that if the government removes this signboard, the Union will be compelled to take other course of action.

The KSU has been observing the Khasi National Awakening Day on April 4. It was on this day in the year 1829, legendary freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem had raised the battle cry against the invasive British forces but was eventually captured. He died in captivity in Dhaka on July 17, 1835.
