SHILLONG, JUN 2: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Consumers & Farmers Protection Cell has demanded the state government to increase the number of markets in the different districts of the state.
In a memorandum to the Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh on Wednesday, the KSU said, “…the cell would like to suggest to the department concerned to identify new markets for the sale of agricultural products as the present numbers of markets is limited as compared to the numbers of wholesale and retail buyers. Hence, increasing the number of markets can help avoid congestion and the authority can monitor and maintain health protocols simultaneously.”
The Union also requested the government to prioritize the agricultural produce, transport and markets of indigenous and local farmers from the state.
It said it is evident that there is an outcry from the local farmers as they are struggling to sell their produce because of the mismatch of demand and supply from one area to another and thus, creates wastage of agricultural produce and as a result the local farmers have suffered from tremendous financial losses in recent times.
