TURA, NOV 23: Meghalaya police investigating the abduction of two labourers in South Garo hills on Wednesday said that the kidnapping was planned by a group of “daily wage labourers”. Police said that the labourers perpetrated the act to make quick money. On November 20, Somuddin Sheikh and Md. Abdul Hussain were abducted from Komla Bagan, near Nongalbibra in South Garo Hills.
“We believe the act to be one done by a group of labourers (Bengali – Hindi speaking) who attempted to extort money. However once the police got into the picture, they abandoned the plan and fled. The victims too have confirmed that their captors were not locals. We are investigating the matter further,” said Anand Mishra, South Garo Hills SP.
The kidnapping of the duo came at a time when militant activities of various groups have been on the decline owing to the problems faced by demonetization.
“They (militants) have been hit bad and are still trying to come to terms with the announcement. Suddenly militancy isn’t lucrative as no one has cash in hand and if they do, it is of money that has already been demonetized,” Mishra added.
