SHILLONG, DEC 8: Shillong Lajong FC and SAI Guwahati played out a 2-2 draw on Tuesday in the U-18 I-League zonal round at the JN stadium Shillong.

Shillong Lajong FC took a 2-0 lead in the first with goals from Meban and Samuel Lalmuanpuia but SAI Guwahati did well as Pranjal and Paukhanmung scored two quick goals to level the score 2-2.

The first half began with Lajong as the stronger team and posing threats on numerous occassion in front of goal which made the SAI defenders nervous on a couple of occasion.

After playing brilliantly well upfront, Lajong subsequently earned a free kick after a foul committed by a SAI player. Hardy Cliff Nongbri took the free kick and his shot found Meban Wahlang who easily headed the ball into the net in the 9th minute.

The team undoubtedly gained more confidence and pressed upfront many times and almost doubled the lead in the 14th minute but Samuel Lalmuanpuia’s shot went straight to the keeper’s hands.

The reds knew the importance of Tuesday’s game and hence kept on attacking and posed danger to SAI boys and doubled their lead in the 37th minute when the ball landed on Samuel Lalmuanpuia’s foot who quickly turned and flicked it with his left foot to find the back of the net.

But the lead was short-lived for the reds as SAI made a good counter attack and scored two quick goals by Pranjal Bhumji and Paukhanmung in the 37th and 38th minute respectively to level the scoreline – which was all they needed to stand a chance to qualify from the North East Zone for the final round of the U-18 I-League.

Lajong had many chances in the second half to regain the lead but were not lucky to convert the chances as SAI Guwahati played defensively till the end to thwart all of Lajong’s attempts on goal.

Lajong will take on Rangdajied United FC on November 13 at the JN stadium while SAI Guwahati will play against Guwahati FC on November 20.-By Our Reporter
