SHILLONG, OCT 20: The 25TH death anniversary of the first Meghalaya chief minister late Capt Williamson A Sangma was observed by organizing quiz, essay and drawing and painting competitions.

West Garo hills district administration in collaboration with Meghalaya Arts and Culture department  organised the competition to observe the week long death anniversary  of the late chief minister of the state.

The event saw huge participation of school children from about 15 schools and a total of 150 school children took part . The topic of the essay competition was “Late Captain W. A. Sangma and the Garo hills of his dreams “.

The quiz was a state and national quiz with a segment on the life and times and achievements of late Capt Sangma .

The drawing and painting competitions generated maximum interest and excitement . In keeping with the vision of the great leader to preserve the environment and the ethos of peace and multi-culturism – the topic was “Green , Clean and Peaceful Meghalaya” which immediately struck a chord with the young school children .

The event was sponsored by Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign of the government and the Chief Ministers Youth Development Scheme .

West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi also attended the programme and had a friendly interaction with the school children participating in the programme about the inspirational life of late Capt Sangma .There was distribution of tree saplings for all the participating students.

The decision to organize such a programme was to create awareness about the life, achievements and philosophy of the great departed visionary leader late Capt Williamson A Sangma who was not just the first chief minister and first Chief Executive Member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council but also a national leader and an apostle of peace who carried with him the aspirations of all sections of society and enjoyed their love and support.

The winners of the competitions shall be felicitated on October 25 in the formal official programme for observance of the 25th death anniversary at 2 pm in the District Council office premises in Tura .

Chief minister Mukul Sangma shall be the chief guest of the programme . Apart from the prize distribution there shall also be a photo exhibition of late Capt Sangma from the period photos recovered from his family and friends.- By Our Reporter
