Lok Sabha polls date

SHILLONG, FEB 28: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce the date for the Lok Sabha elections next week. Election department official said that the ECI will announce the date for all the phases of Lok Sabha by mid-week.

The official said dates for all the phases of the Lok Sabha elections in different parts of India will be announced next week. He informed that once the dates are announced by the ECI, the model code of conduct will immediately come in operation.

In Meghalaya, only the United Democratic Party (UDP)  has so far announced the name of its legislator and party’s working president Paul Lyngdoh as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has still not announced the names of its party candidate for the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats. The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has forwarded the names of the ticket aspirants for both the seat to its party high command for approval.

Congress party sources in Meghalaya however claims that though sitting Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala might be out of favour with some of the state party leaders, but he will be getting the party ticket. It may be noted that beside former Meghalaya Assembly speaker Charles Pyngrope, Congress legislator Ronnie V Lyngdoh had also applied for the party ticket.

For Tura seat Daryl William Cheran Momin, grandson of the first Meghalaya chief minister (late) Captain Williamson A Sangma, is the front runner for the Congress ticket. Momin is one among the nine Congress aspirants to have applied the Congress ticket for the Tura Lok Sabha seat. – By Our Reporter
