Mahila to play peacemaker in the State

Shillong, Aug.14: Taking a preemptive step to ensure that the Congress is not entwined in factional battle from those who had been denied party ticket, the Congress high command has given the responsibility of playing the role of peacemaker and ensuring the unity of the party during the election.

In every Assembly election, the Congress had to grapple with factionalism as those who had been denied the party tickets would eventually contest a rebel candidate. To avoid such recurrence, the high command has dispatched the All India Mahila Congress secretary Poonam Bhatia to oversee that the party’s prospect in the coming Assembly election to be held early next year is not ruffled.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday at the Shillong Press Club, Bhatia said, “The Mahila Congress will be a platform which will act as a bridge to bring unity among all the factions.”

As part of its effort to keep the party intact in the run up to the assembly election, Bhatia will meet chief minister Mukul Sangma, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president DD Lapang and Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope and talk about the need for keeping the party united and clinching maximum assembly seats.

Application for Congress tickets from aspiring candidates will be accept from August 16 to 30. Bhatia also said that the party will be happy to give half of the 60 Assembly seats to women. She said, “ If there are suitable women who applies for party ticket we will certainly give 30 ticket out of the 60 assembly seats.”

As of now the six women candidates  who are looking forward to contest from the Congress party and are likely to get tickets are minister  Ampareen Lyngdoh, pradesh congress committee working president Deborah Marak,  former UDP legislator Roshan Warjri, Eureka Lyngdoh, Pelcy Snaitang and the sitting member of Khasi Hills Autonomous  District Council, Irene Lyngdoh.- By Our Reporter
