MCAB funds Shillong SOS kids’ education

SHILLONG, MAR 28: Going beyond its corporate venture, the Meghalaya Co-operative Apex Bank Limited (MCAB) has taken the responsibility to fund the education of ten children from the SOS village located at Umiam. A simply function was held at the village to mark the MCAB corporate education sponsorship on Thursday.

The MCAB will be taking care of the educational expenses of the ten children from the SOS village for a period of one year. Each child will need Rs 15, 600 to meet the educational expenses. The MCAB has agreed to meet the educational expenses of the ten children which come to around Rs 1, 56,000 annually.

At the small gathering in the SOS village MCAB chairman W Kyndiah said that the education sponsorship of the SOS children is a humble gesture on the part of the bank to ensure that the children gets the opportunity to pursue their education. He, however, promised, “As the MCAB grows bigger; hopefully we will be able to play a bigger role in providing more assistance to the children of this village.”

MCAB managing director DF War described his bank’s education assistance to the ten children of the SOS village as “a drop in the ocean.” He too echoed his chairman’s optimism that once the bank grows it will be able to contribute in a bigger way to the SOS village.

The SOS village in Umiam was started in 1996 and started functioning from 1999. There are around twelve family homes in this village and about 120 children, who are parentless, have been adopted. The village also has twelve mothers and six aunties to assist mothers in managing the village. Around ten to twelve children stays in a cottage.- By Suraj Joshi
