SHILLONG, JUNE 11: Protesting against the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) management failure to pay their salaries for the last eight months, the employees of this public sector staged a sit-in-demonstration demanding the state government’s intervention.

The state BJP leaders also joined the MCCL employees in their demonstration on Thursday.

Beside demanding their pending salaries, the MCCL employees also wants operationalization of the extension plant known as the dry process which was constructed over a decade age.

BJP state unit president KS Lyngdoh said, “It is very unfortunate that MCCL located in Sohra has failed to function for almost one year and staff have not got their salary for 8 months causing hardship to them as they depend entirely on this cement factory.”

Lyngdoh said he fails to understand how the government failed to managed MCCL, which is semi-government, when many private cement factories are flourishing making lot of profit.” He said “We feel that the state government under chief minister Mukul Sangma should take immediate steps and action against whosever responsible in the management of this factory.”

Lyngdoh informed that a memorandum will be submitted to the CM with a request to the central government to intervene if necessary. He warned, “Will see that the state government look into this matter and also that the central governments initiate an inquiry as crores of rupees have been invested in this factory.”

Lyngdoh informed that employees working in the cement factory are suffering as they cannot even send their children to schools due to their inability to pay fees and purchase books and uniforms.

BJYM president Egenstar Kurkalang said that the new expansion plant scheme of which the foundation stone was laid in  2005 also failed.  He said not only the new expansion plant scheme failed but the existing plant has also stop working which has made people to suspect that there is something fishy.

Kurkalang said that according to the factories act, payment of wages act, payment of salaries to the employee should be within one month to both private and government entity. He, therefore, argued that it is the government’s responsibility to look into this issue adding that the party demand clearance of payments to all the employees at the earliest.- By Our Reporter
