MDA govt moots idea of give & take to end inter-state border dispute

SHILLONG, JUNE 27: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government is mooting the idea of ‘give and take’ for resolving the age-old boundary dispute between the two states – Meghalaya and Assam.

“Once the meeting of both the chief ministers of the two states is held, we will again talk about this give and take policy,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters here.

He said otherwise if both the states keep on fighting, there will be no end at all. “I don’t see any solution (to the problem) until and uless we are agreeable to the give and take policy be it Assam be it Meghalaya,” Tynsong said.

“So I personally feel the spirit of give and take should be there if it is not there the door is close if the door is close there is no point of meeting if there is no point of meeting then we have to start for a civil war,” he added.

Asked, the deputy chief minister said that earlier Meghalaya government had already submitted documents on its claim over the 12 areas of differences to the Assam government.

“From our side we claim that these are the areas where would like for retransferring or may be solution in place,” he said.

Stating that the state government needs somemore time on this, Tynsong said, “We would like to see again the meeting of the chief ministers from the two states happen very soon.”

On the other hand, the deputy chief minister said that the status quo is being maintained and both the chief secretaries of the two states are also keeping intouch with each other.

“We also do have a kind of regular meeting between the district administrations from the two states in case if there are any issues which need to be attended,” he said.
