MDA intact: Tynsong

SHILLONG, JUNE 15: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has reiterated that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) is united for the upcoming election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat, slated to be held on June 19.

“We are all intact as we have unanimously decided in the committee chaired by me that Dr WR Kharlukhi will be the official candidate of MDA for the Rajya Sabha seat,” Tynsong told reporters on Monday.

Dr Kharlukhi is the state president of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).

Asked, Tynsong said, “We have discussed in detail about the Citizenship Amendment Bill, now CAA and therefore the question (of whether the CAA will affect the MDA) does not arise.”

On the decision of the lone KHNAM legislator Adelbert Nongrum to abstain from voting in the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, the deputy chief minister however advised the MLA to withdraw himself from the MDA.

“If he (Nongrum) is not happy, he is free to withdraw from the MDA,” Tynsong said.

Nongrum is part of the United Progressive Forum (UDF) formed by regional parties which are supporting the MDA government. He had cited that he is confused on the stand of the ruling NPP over the CAA.

“Therefore I will not be a part of the same decision in regards with the upcoming Rajya Sabha election which will commence on the 19 of June 2020,” Nongrum had stated in a statement issued recently.

“The same NPP cast for CAA in the Lok Sabha Parliament  whereas here in Meghalaya the same so called NPP is demanding implementation of ILP,” he said adding “If I, being a public representative I’m so confused, then how much more will the people of the state be shocked and stuck in a real dilemma.”
