MDC slams police inaction

SHILLONG, AUG 25: Congress MDC in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) today slammed the police for failing to act against a lessee, who was allegedly indulging in illegal collection of taxes in South West Garo Hills District.

In a statement issued here, MDC Stevie Marak said that despite two FIRs have been lodged, yet there was no action from the Ampati police station over the illegal collection.

“The illegal collections are continuing with the Officer in Charge of Ampati police station citing that the police have no power to stop the illegal collections,” Marak said.

He informed as per complaints received from the people of his constituency, the lessee of Ampati Bazar had been illegally collecting taxes higher than the amount specified in the lease with the GHADC.

“Upon investigation, it was found to be true and an FIR was lodged at Ampati police station with evidence to stop further tax collections by the lessee at Ampati bazar until an EC meeting at the GHADC to decide the course of action and a notification in this regard,” he said.
