MeECL to seek help

SHILLONG, OCT 31: After increasing cases of electrocution in the state, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has decided to seek the support of traditional institutions to help curb such incidents from recurring.Speaking to reporters on Monday, MeECL chairman PS Thangkhiew said the setting up of ‘Village Level Anti-Theft Committee’ at the village level has been proposed to assist the MeECL in order to enable it to take quick action.

The committee will comprise of traditional headmen, officials of the MeECL and district administration, he said.

According to Thangkhiew, the committee will not only check power theft but will also inspect the functioning transformers, electricity wire-lines and others within their respective jurisdiction.

If any problem is reported the MeECL can immediately take action to ensure prevention of any untoward incidents or mishap.

He also admitted there have been increase in the cases of electrocution in the past one year. The recent one being the tragic incident where six lives have been lost in a village under Mawphlang Block.

He also said the corporation will have to further strengthen the inspection system headed by the SDO which was already in place to ensure such incidents are prevented in the near future.-By Our Reporter

    So was the fuse too stolen?? Was it lightening or power theft….yes there is power theft by big industries and all along Wahumkhrah too…illegal industries coming up in disputed lands with Govt… The unfortunate family had only 1-2 bulbs which could both hardly be 120 watts… The transformer had capacity of 11000 volts ..plastic meter was fitted by MeECL ..
