Meghalaya (red jersey) vs Assam (1)SHILLONG, MARCH 22: Meghalaya stormed into the semi-finals of the 4th Dr. T. Ao Memorial Football Tournament defeating Assam 3-0 in their last group match at the J. N. Sports Complex here on Friday.

Arunachal Pradesh are the other team from the group to make it to the last four with a 2-1 over Nagaland in a match that was played earlier in the day.

Meghalaya dominated their match right from the start; as early as the first minute Ronnie Mc. Nongbri’s free kick was saved by Assam custodian Dulu Gogoi. The home team went ahead in the 13th minute when Greeting Wahlang headed home a measured flag kick of skipper Niwan O Gatphoh.

In the 39th minute of the game, Niwan took a shot from zero angle which was deflected into the goal via the chest of Assam goalie Gogoi.

Assam created few chances after the breather, but the Meghalaya defense proved impregnable. In the 83rd minute, the home team sealed the faith of the visitors when Kerionald Pyngrope’s half-volley from outside box penetrated into the net.

Earlier in the day, Arunachal booked their berth in the last four stage of the meet defeating Nagaland 2-1.

The Arunachalis scored both their goals in the first half of the match. Nvamar Lovi scored the first goal in the 17th minute of the game while Tadar Kojum netted the second in the 34th minute. Lipok Sashi reduced the margin for Nagaland in the 42nd minute of the game. (By Our Reporter)
