Meghalaya CM inaugurates Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex, says govt to invest more on sports infrastructure

 Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said his government was able to make more investment in sports infrastructure than what has been done in the last 45 years.

Inaugurating the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex at Wahiajer village in West Jaintia Hills District, Sangma said, “Let me assure you that our government is committed to the youth of our state. In the last five years more investment in the sports infrastructure has been done than what has been done in last 45 years.”

“More sport infrastructures have been created in the last five years and in the next three to four years will be created which will be much more than what has been created in the last 45 years,” he added.

The chief minister said in the last five-six years his government has focused on infrastructure investment like never before.

“Our expenditure has doubled in the last five years and in terms of capital investment in the infrastructure has tripled in the last five years and that is the reason why so many infrastructure projects today are coming up throughout the state and many more will come in the coming years.” 

Highlighting the other achievements of the MDA government, the chief minister said the government has been able to construct roads in Meghalaya in a speed like never before where almost close to 35 percent of the roads of the state were constructed in the last five years.

He said new block office buildings are coming up in all the blocks throughout the state while adding that all government lower primary schools, upper primary schools, secondary schools and higher secondary schools are getting new buildings or are being renovated.

“All PHCs, CHCs, sub centres and hospitals are in the process of being renovated and in different districts that didn’t have DC offices and SP offices today there is a move to ensure all infrastructures are there in all districts,” Sangma informed.

Announcing that the next edition of the Meghalaya Games will be held in West Jaintia Hills District, the CM said, “It is a great moment of happiness for us and I am sure it is a great moment of happiness and excitement for all citizens in Jaintia Hills today.” He however said, “Remember such responsibility comes with challenges. We need the support of all the people,  leaders, community, institutes to make the games a success.”

He said that the government is working towards ensuring that the Meghalaya Games will be one of the biggest games that the state has seen. 

Moreover, the chief minister announced that all athletes who have won medals in the state games will be felicitated very soon.

“ All medal winners will be called to Shillong and will be felicitated by the me and the sports minister,” he said while further assuring that that scholarships given to Olympic winners will continue and that all medal winners of the Meghalaya Games will be given financial assistance to ensure that they continue their passion and invest in the sports that they like.

The Chief Minister also informed that the government intends to intensify activities for the youth be it in Arts, Sports, Entrepreneurship or music. “We will also have competitions In Science, Maths and Innovations to promote and encourage our youth to inculcate scientific temper and be innovative,” he said. He also informed of an Inter Constituency Football Tournament that will be soon announced officially. “All 60 constituencies will be competing and the players will be drawn from the respective constituencies. This will allow different regions to compete, learn from each other and more importantly bring harmony, peace and unity among the people of the State,” he said.

The inaugural function was followed by a final match of the 3rd Sniawbhalang Football Tournament.

The Wahiajer Football Field and Synthetic Athletic Track Stadium has a capacity for 4300 spectators with spacious parking facilities.

Earlier, deputy chief minister incharge urban affairs and Nartiang legislator Sniawbhalang Dhar informed that over 1870 football players from 70 teams have participated in the tournament.

Also present at the function were Deputy chief minister incharge home Prestone Tynsong, water resources minister Comingone Ymbon, sports minister Shakliar Warjri and others.
