Meghalaya CM urges people to vote for NPP without fear

SHILLONG, OCT 5: National People’s Party (NPP) president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday asked the people of the state not to fear but to come out and support the candidates of the party in the upcoming bye-elections to the 3 Assembly seats slated for October 30.

His appeal came in the wake of the threats issued by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) asking the party workers to immediately resign from the NPP within a month’s time. This was after an IED bomb was recovered from the NPP office at Lachumiere on Monday afternoon.

The outfit had also threatened to shoot ministers as it alleged that the recent death of its former general secretary Cherishterfield Thangkhiew was a complete “political conspiracy” by some ministers.

The Chief Minister was also addressing a meeting for welcoming former Congress leader and Mawphlang MDC Lamphrang Blah along with his supporters to the NPP’s fold. Blah was also officially announced as the candidate of the party for the Mawphlang bypoll, which is necessitated after the death of Independent MLA SK Sunn on September 10.

Sangma also questioned the timing of the incident.

“I wonder why at such a timing that one day before Blah is supposed to join somebody comes up with a statement like this. Are they scared that the NPP is growing from strength to strength?” he asked.

He continued, “Let me tell you after the power from above, the power that God has, second to that is only the power and will of the people. There is no other strength that is more powerful than democracy there is no other strength that is more powerful than the people so please don’t put these kinds of challenges.”

He also asked the NPP leaders and supporters to be strong. “We are here to fight for our people, we are here to ensure to take our state forward. We should not be bowed down by these simple challenges that are thrown at us,” he said.

Stating that there is nothing to fear, the Chief Minister said, “I urge each and every one of you to come out confidently, work freely, support our candidate and make sure in this coming election which is going to take place on October 30 and result will be out on November 2, we shall come out with flying colours.”

Urging the people of Mawphlang to vote for the veteran political leader of the area, the NPP president said that Blah has been a person who has given and dedicated his life to politics.

“He (Blah) has dedicated so many years to the people of Mawphlang selflessly never looking at what is there for me. He has sacrificed his life, his family, everything to ensure he is able to give his time to the people of Mawphlang,” he said.

Blah decided to quit the Congress since it was not ready to give him a ticket. The Congress had announced former Mawphlang MLA Kennedy Khyriem as its candidate for the bye election.
