Meghalaya records 450 new COVID-19 cases, 9 deaths

SHILLONG, MAY 11: Nine more persons have succumbed to COVID-19 taking the death toll to 242 in the state on Tuesday.

Of this, six are from East Khasi Hills district, two from West Jaintia Hills and one from Ri Bhoi, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said.

The state has also recorded yet another highest single-day spike of 450 more persons tested positive for the viral infection.

Dr War said new cases include 312 in East Khasi Hills district, 45 West Garo Hills, 20 East Jaintia Hills, 18 West Jaintia Hills, 15 South West Garo Hills, 6 West Khasi Hills, 5 East Garo Hills and 2 North Garo Hills.

He informed that of 206 patients who have recovered from the viral infection, 148 are from East Khasi Hills, 26 Ri Bhoi, 12 West Garo Hills, 10 East Jaintia Hills, 6 West Jaintia Hills, 2 South West Khasi Hills and 2 North Garo Hills.

So far, the state has detected a total of 20,579 COVID-19 cases out of which 3,297 are active cases, 17,040 recovered and 242 deaths.

With 1,907 active COVID-19 cases, East Khasi Hills, that includes state capital Shillong is the worst affected district in the state, followed by Ri Bhoi with 458 cases.

There are 280 cases in West Garo Hills, 144 East Jaintia Hills, 132 West Khasi Hills, 130 in West Jaintia Hills, 96 South West Garo Hills, 55 South Garo Hills, 44 East Garo Hills, 36 North Garo Hills and 15 South West Khasi Hills.

On the other hand, of the 4,90,677 persons who have tested for COVID-19 in the state as on date, 4,70,098 were tested negative for the virus even as 729 persons are in institutional quarantine and 2,568 under home quarantine.

There are 1,17,222 entrants from outside the state.

27,242 healthcare workers had received the first dose of Covishield vaccine and 19,181 had received the second dose, while 61,259 frontline workers got the first shot of the vaccine and 26,108 got the second dose as on Tuesday.

Moreover, 2,01,593 persons from among the general public were vaccinated with the first dose and 25,708 were inoculated with the second dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 across the state.
