Meghalaya set for Durga Puja celebrations

SHILLONG, OCT 12: Over 230 community durga puja pandals will be put up in Meghalaya this Durga Puja, one of important festivals of the Hindus.

Central Puja Committee (CPC) general secretary JL Das said there will be 232 community durga puja pandals including 64 in state capital.

While 112 pandals will be set up across the four districts of Khasi Hills region, a total of 109 in Garo Hills region and 11 in Jaintia Hills, a region which is home of a century old Durga temple in Nartiang.

The celebration will begin with the committee’s annual Get-together of Harmony on October 13 where the Governor Tathagata Roy will address an all faith meet at Stony land, Dhankheti, Shillong, he said.

All puja pandals will be put under CCTV surveillance and maximum security will be put round the clock to ensure that the celebration is without any untoward incident.

About 11.53 per cent of the 3 million people living in Meghalaya (25 per cent in Urban areas and about 8 per cent in rural areas are Hindus) according to the 2011 Census.

Das said the CPC will undertake cleaning drive at immersion ghat located at the bank of river Wahumkhrah, Polo before and after the durga Puja which is on October 14-15 and October 20-21.

“CPC will also undertake beautification work at Immersion Ghat by planting Trees etc. CPC has constituted a strong its Immersion Ghat Maintenance & Development Committee for the aforesaid purpose,” he added.

The CPC’s SK Das Memorial Drum-Beat Competition (Traditional) will be held at the Puja Pandal of RR Colony Saradiya Durga Puja Committee on October 18.

The general secretary further informed that the district administration and CPC have also requested the MUDA secretary to keep open all its parking lots which include Police Bazar, Polo, Luckier Road till midnight during the ensuing Durga Puja as to facilitate puja visitors.

“The district administration has also requested the PWD to repair all damaged roads before the Durga Puja festival and MeECL and Shillong Municipal authorities to make all street lights functional during and after the festival,” he said.

On ensuing Immersion day on October 19, he said that the CPC will deploy more than 100 Volunteers at Immersion Ghat, Polo and on different Immersion routes of Greater Shillong to assist the district administration for peaceful & incident free Immersion of Durga Idols.

Meanwhile, the CPC’s advance dewali celebration and holding of the Prasad Gupta Memorial Drum-Beat Competition (indigenous) will be held at Vivekananda Sangha, Shillong on November 3.
