Meghalaya to hold elections in two ADCs on February 27, 2019

SHILLONG, DEC 20: The state Cabinet on Thursday announced the holding of elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) on February 27, next year.

After the meeting chaired by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma here, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong informed that the cabinet has approved the proposal of district council affairs department for holding of elections to the two autonomous district councils.

He said the notification for the ADC elections will be issued on February 2 while the last date of filing of nominations will be on February 7 and the following day (February 8) will be the scrutiny of nomination papers and last date of withdrawal of nominations on February 9.

“The date of polling will be held on February 27 and the results will be declared on March 2,” Tynsong said.

Earlier, the deputy chief minister informed that the date of publication of the draft electoral rolls will be on January 12 and the last date of filing of claims and objections – January 22, disposal of the same – Janaury 26 and final publication of electoral rolls on January 30.

Asked, Tynsong informed that legally the model code of conduct will be effective from the date of publication of the notification which is on February 2.

Stating that there was no mention about model code of conduct in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, he however said, “To ensure the confidence of everybody and for the fitness of things, we decided that the model code of conduct will be in place.”
