SHILLONG, JUNE 22: Public Works Department (PWD) is one among the twenty-eight departments of the state government which have allegedly failed to disburse salaries to the muster-roll workers for the past six months.

“The PWD South Division Office in Shillong has not paid the muster rolls their salaries for the past six months,” RTI activist Desparsing Rani told reporters at a news conference on Monday.

According to him, there are over 300 muster roll workers under the PWD South Division office who are still waiting to get their salary while almost a hundred of them in the central division have also not received their pay.

He alleged that it is a  similar case in the other twenty-seven departments of the government where the muster rolls working in these respective departments have been deprived of their salaries.

Stating that minimum wages for the muster roll workers was already revised since June 1 last year, Rani, however, said, “The revised rates for highly skilled, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled in the 28 departments are yet to be implemented.”

“The muster roll workers are still getting the 2009 minimum wages,” he alleged adding “This has affected them.”

Meanwhile, Rani also alleged that some of appointment of muster roll workers was ‘political’. “Some of the muster roll workers are being appointed directly by politicians,” he said.

According to him, these politically appointed muster rolls don’t even come to work but they just collect their salary at the end of the month.

Saying that the issue is of a serious concern, he appealed to the public to come forward and share information with regards to those muster roll workers who skipped work and only collect their salary.- By Our Reporter
