SHILLONG, OCT 30: Former legislator of Mawphlang Kennedy C Khyriem on Friday said that his top priority would be to fight against corruption and misgovernance if he is re-elected in the bye-election.
“I expect to win this bye-election and (my priority) would be to fight against corruption and misgovernance,” Khyriem, candidate of the Indian National Congress, told reporters after casting his vote.
The former police officer turned politician is contesting against UDP candidate Eugeneson Lyngdoh and former party colleague and sitting Mawphlang MDC Lamphrang Blah, who recently joined the National People’s Party (NPP).
When asked, Khyriem said that although the sympathy wave will not work to a great extent, he still feels that the football star is his closest rival.
“(However), I don’t feel that the NPP candidate will give me a tough fight. Although he (Blah) came out of the Congress but hardly 10 percent he could carry the votes to him but 90 percent they are still intact, they are with the Congress,” he claimed.
He also admitted that the bypoll is going to have a huge impact in the upcoming 2023 Assembly elections in the state.
“Yes very much, this is the first step to 2023. People say this is the semi final but I say this is final if I win it will be easier for me in 2023,” he said.
On the use of money power, the Congress leader said, “Opponents they may use money power since they have lots of money as they are in government. I can’t say but I heard people say that the NPP are throwing money left and right, even UDP also but I don’t have any proof.”
The bye-election was necessitated following the death of sitting MLA SK Sunn on September 10.
