‘NC not a number game’

SHILLONG, SEPT 14: Opposition Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Thursday said the no-confidence motion against the ruling Congress-led MUA government is not a number game but an opportunity to highlight its failure on various fronts.  “It (NC) is not a number or toppling game but is an opportunity to debate on the failures of the state government,” said HSPDP chief Ardent M Basaiawmoit while making it clear on the party’s decision to support the NC against the government.

Pointing out on various issues which the state government has failed, he said these relates to the law and order situation, sense of insecurity, economic activities and others which are affecting the people of the state.

With the HSPDP also supporting the resolution against the removal of the Speaker, Basaiawmoit said, “The party has taken its stand since day one in which we skipped the election and felicitation of the Speaker.”

“We have protested at that time against the ruling government for putting up the candidature of non-indigenous person because as a tribal state, we want that an indigenous person to occupy the post,” he said.

However, two opposition Independent legislators from Garo Hills – John Leslee Sangma and Saleng A Sangma were not present in the Assembly when the no-confidence motion was admitted by the Speaker today.

When inquired about the absence of the Independents, the HSPDP chief said that the opposition bench is intact as he expressed confidence that the two members will actively participate during the discussion on the NC tomorrow.-By Our Reporter
