SHILLONG, NOV 29: Selection Commission (SSC) chairman A Bhattacharya revealed on Saturday that less than two per cent of the applicants who appear for SSC exams, which lead to government jobs in a range of agencies, come from the North East region.

Bhattacharya revealed this during an awareness campaign held in the city. He said though the North East’s proportion of the national population is around three per cent, only 1.8 per cent of those sitting in the latest round of exams came from the region.

“In 2014, 29,25,076 students from northern region and 36,00,868 students from central region took part in the examination, but from the entire North Eastern region there were mere 2,69,864 students who stood for the examination making it mere 1.8 per cent in the entire country,” Bhattacharya said.

Assam sends in the largest number of applicants from the seven sister states, followed by Manipur and Tripura. Meghalaya comes in at fourth, which is disappointing as the state’s capital Shillong is known for its high quality schools and colleges.

“Shillong has the best educational institutions and the students are bright and are far better than students hailing from other parts of the country,” Bhattacharya stated, adding, “The only thing that is lacking is confidence. There is a need for the students of the region to come forward and focus on their studies.”

The SSC is the apex organisation for recruitment in central government jobs and the commission has to concentrate on the region, he added.

Apart from a lack of confidence, there is not enough awareness among the youth about the job opportunities available as compared to students from other parts of the country.

“The educated youth of this region have potential but limited opportunities,” the official SSC newsletter reads.

Therefore, the SSC, in association with the Department of Personnel and Training, is conducting an awareness campaign in Aizawl, Guwahati and Shillong at the direction of the prime minister’s office.-By Our Reporter
