f the deans is facing allegation of sexually harassing a research scholar. The students’ community is up in arms as they are demanding immediate removal of the dean.

On Wednesday students under the banner of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) took out a protest march to the office of the university’s vice chancellor demanding action against the dean

The said dean Prof FA Qadri, is holding the position of Dean, School of Social Sciences, and has been alleged to have sexually harassed one of the research scholars of the history department on August 26.

Armed with placards, the students also submitted a memorandum to the VC. NEHUSU president Tyrchain Lypon said, “We demand immediate removal of Prof FA Qadri as the Dean, School of Social Sciences and also his service as a teacher should be terminated.”

He said the accused dean needs to be removed pending investigation into the case.

Later, Prof Manmohan Singh, who came out to speak on behalf of the VC assured the agitating students that action will be taken once the report and recommendation of the NEHU’s Women Cell is submitted.

He also informed that the NEHU authority will immediately seek the progress of the investigation by the Women Cell, which has taken up the case.

The students, however, demanded that the assurance be given in black and white by the NEHU authority. NEHUSU has served a two-day deadline to the NEHU authority for completing the investigation into the case.

NEHUSU felt the university should not tolerate cases of sexual harassment and must ensure that the culprits are punished as per law of the land.-By Our Reporter
