NEIPF to observe ‘black flag day’ in protest against Citizenship Bill

SHILLONG, JAN 9: The North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF) has decided to observe a ‘black flag day’ in the state capital on January 11 as a mark of protest against the BJP-led NDA government for passing the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha.

Prior to this, the Forum led by United Liberation Front of Asom’s (Ulfa) pro-talk faction’s general secretary, Anup Chetia will soon open its chapter in Meghalaya.

Organizations like the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) are all set to be part of the NEIPF Meghalaya chapter.

Informing this here on Wednesday, FKJGP president and NEIPF convener, Wellberth Rani said that the conglomerate of organizations under the banner of the Meghalaya chapter will observe the ‘black flag day’ from 9 am to 3 pm.

Rani said effigies of the BJP and the Citizenship Amendment Bill would be burnt on the day as a mark of showing of our protest against the draconian law.

Terming the passing of the Bill as a “political agenda” of the BJP, he also asked the Meghalaya government not to satisfy only in making mere statement but should show more aggressive actions against the Bill.

Asked, Rani said the Meghalaya government is demanded to immediately convene a special session of the State Assembly to discuss and adopt a resolution to oppose the bill.
