‘Netiquette for safety in the cyber world’

SHILLONG, AUG 10: Expert tips on ‘dos’ and ‘don’t’ while using the internet were given to students of different city schools her with special emphasis on cyber-hygiene and netiquette to ensure safe and security from menace of cyber threats & crimes that are rising at an alarming rate.

Hundreds of students attended the lecture on ‘cyber threats in digital world’ delivered by a renowned chief resource advisor and speaker for Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) Rakshit Tandon held at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Wednesday

Organized by the state Information Technology & Communication Department, a similar lecture was also given to police and government officials.

“We need to be safe online as you cannot trust anybody online,” Tandon said while informing that over 3 lakh cases of cybercrime incidences are reported from across the country including north eastern region last year when compared in 2014 which was 1.30 lakh cases.

According to him, the major issues related to cybercrimes include – fake profiles/impersonation on social networking, defamatory posts, sexting-private pictures viral, identity hacked and misused, bullying on public pages and pornography, online banking frauds, ATM card frauds & others.

As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 5752 persons arrested under cybercrime (IT Act + IPC sections) out of which 143 are below the age of 18 years while 2782 are those between the age of 18 to 30 years.

Tandon, also known as a revolutionary in cyber security, have interacted with over 17 lakh students across the country and said, “I am getting at least 30 to 40 complaints from children which include those from Meghalaya and North East region.”

Emphasizing on cyber hygiene and netiquette (which is etiquette on the Internet), he urged the students especially girls to refrain from the habit of posting pictures on social networking sites like ‘Facebook’ and even the present popular mobile application – ‘Whatsapp’.

“The moment you start posting your personal information online you are only inviting troubles. Please do not give permission to anybody to enter your life until and unless you know them personally,” he said.

In a lighter vein, the cyber security expert said that people have become champions of love – through a two minute online chat.

While enlightening the students on the various cyber laws, he said that downloading sexual and bad pictures is also a crime. “You should kill it (temptation) and respect women by not downloading and forwarding such pictures,” he said.

Pointing on cases of bank account hacking, he said in order to ensure security from hacker – keep difficult passwords for email, keep your recovery options secured, use virtual keyboards to enter passwords, keep separate passwords for social networking sites for logging in and never save passwords on your browser.-By Our Reporter
