‘New byelaws welcome’

SHILLONG, AUG 26: HSPDP vice president and legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit has welcomed the new notification of the state government which has curtailed the operation of the Meghalaya Building Byelaws, 2011 to only 50 square kilometers.

“The new notification has clearly defined the areas which the building byelaws would be applicable. Out of the 174 sq km in the notification issued on January, it has reduced its operation to only 50 sq km,” Basaiawmoit said.

According to him, the 124 sq km areas, which the MUDA has decided to lift operation of the building byelaws are those that falls under the schedule areas.  “In view of this, we have decided to soon organize a public rally of which the date which will be shortly announced to make people aware on the new notification,” he said.

Stating that the new notification was notified and published in Meghalaya Gazette yesterday, the HSPDP MDC said the building byelaws will now be implemented in only 12 areas identified as urban areas in the 2011 census.

The 12 urban centres as per the notification include Shillong Municipality (ST), Shillong Cantonment (ST), Nongthymmai (CT), Umlyngka (CT),  Nongmynsong (CT), Lawsohtun (CT), Pynthorumkhrah (CT), Umpling (CT), Mawpat (CT), Madanrting (CT), Mawlai (CT) and Nongskeh (CT).- By Our Reporter
