NGOs demand probe into nurse’s murder

SHILLONG, MAY 30: Four organizations on Wednesday have asked the state government to immediately set up an inquiry to probe into alleged murder and rape of a nurse and ensure the perpetrators of such a heinous crime are punished as per law.

The demand was made in a memorandum submitted to the chief minister Conrad Sangma by the Naga Students’ Union (NSU), Shillong, Tangkhul Students’ Union (TSU), Shillong, Tangkhul Catholic Community (TCC), Shillong and Naga Elder’s Forum (NEF), Shillong.

This came a day after the body of Leiyaton Soro, was recovered from a place near Ryndangbriew view point on Tuesday. Soro, hailing from Chinngjaroi village under Ukhrul district in Manipur, was staying in Nongrim Hills and working as a nurse in Nazareth Hospital.

“We sincerely impress upon you to direct to the competent law enforcing agency of the state to conduct coercive inquiry/investigation into the case so as to book the culprit immediately to face the law and deliver justice to the departed soul and bereaved family,” the leaders of the four organizations said in the memorandum on Wednesday.

Condemning the incident, they said that the nature and circumstances as well as the merciless injury inflicted on the body of Soro, prima facie strongly evidence that she was suspected to be abducted, tortured, raped and murdered by the culprits.

“Such barbaric and inhumane treatment and assault to the late Soro, not only amounts to infringement of her fundamental rights to life and liberty but also attack to the core values of human dignity, liberty of the citizens and the very foundation of civilised society,” they said.

According to the leaders, such crime has no place in a comity of n ations governed by a rule of law like ours adding the criminality meted out to the innocent girls posed grave danger to the safety and security of the womanhood in the state and if left uncheck would be detrimental to the students community in Shillong in particular.

Earlier, a missing complaint was also filed by Soro’s elder brother when she failed to return home on May 26. Soro had gone out in the afternoon after returning from her duty.
