Ngos oppose amendment

SHILLONG, APR 10: Opposing the union government move to amend the sixth schedule of the constitution, ten ngos of Meghalaya have asked the state government not to forward any draft or give its approval to the proposed amendments without consulting and getting the consent of the people. The ngos wants the state government to incorporate the views of the people in the draft that it has been asked to send to the union government.

Opposing the proposed amendment, the ngos said that that the union government took the decision to amend the sixth schedule without consulting the people as it was done “secretly” and “hurriedly.”

The ngos who opposed the proposed amendment includes KSU, JSU, GSU, JYF, CSWO, KWWADA, SSSS, AJYWO, RBYF, TUR, LKKH and JAC.

Buttering their opposition, the ngos said during a meeting on Wednesday that there are many objectionable amendments that are aimed at taking away the constitutional rights of the tribal. The meeting also decided to submit to the government its objection in details.-By Our Reporter
