Ngos, traditional bodies threaten stir over delay in construction of supermarket in Jowai

Shillong, Sept 30: Running out of patience, ngoss, traditional bodies and even concerned denizens of West Jaintia hills district today threatened to resort to “agitations” against the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), if the construction of the much awaited supermarket complex at Jowai fails to take-off within October 5.

The decision was taken at Saturday meeting convened by the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) with the JTTA and Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Jowai (SRSJ).. “If the project fails to take-off within October 5, decision of taking out strong protest is already taken against the JHADC,” JYF president Poipynhun Majaw warned. He said, “We are running out of patience as the JHADC have turned down our demands set forth on many occasions.”

The market (Iaw Musiang) at Jowai town, the district headquarters of the erstwhile Jaintia hills is one of the oldest markets in the region catering to the people of the two districts (West and East Jaintia hills). However, the district council dismantled the old market for developing and beautifying Jowai town by building up a “new market complex” which is yet begins and instead the old market place has become an eyesore, Majaw said.

Majaw  said, “The delay in the construction of the market has affected the people especially those who used to earn their livelihood from the market.” Recently, the JYF had even threatened to ask the CBI to conduct an enquiry over the delay on the implementation of the project.

The project was sanctioned way back in 2001-02 at a cost of Rs 18.09 crore. However, the JHADC has to bear 10 percent of the expenditure for the construction work. The ministry of DoNER has already sanctioned Rs 6.33 crores as the first installment in 2004 out of the estimated Rs 18.9 crores for the project to the JHADC.- By Our Reporter
