Night curfew lifted in Shillong city following improvement in situation

SHILLONG, AUG 20: The state government today finally decided to lift the night curfew imposed in the entire Shillong city following the five-day violent protest in Motphran-Mawkhar area.

The night curfew has been imposed for 80 days from June 1 in the affected areas and in the entire city after an altercation at Them Iew Mawlong and the subsequent mob fury on May 31.

After gradual relaxation, the district administration of East Khasi Hills District has decided to lift the curfew with effect from Monday midnight.

It may be mentioned here that the night curfew was imposed in the entire Shillong city since June 29 for five hours from 12 midnight to 5 am.

“In view of the improvement of law and order situation in Shillong city, night curfew has been totally lifted in the whole of Shillong from August20,” an order issued by the deputy commissioner Peter S Dkhar said here.

Similary, the curfew was also lifted from 14 affected areas falling under Lumdiengjri police station which include Jaïaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including Cantonment beat house areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge).

Speaking to reporters, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Davis NR Marak however informed that the deployment of security would continue Motphran-Mawkhar area and Them Iew Mawlong area to ensure that law and order is maintained.

Violent protest had erupted from May 31 night to June 5 at Motphran-Mawkhar area following an incident at Them ïew Mawlong.

This incident led to a violent agitation at Motphran and Mawkhar area on May 31 night as mob clashed with security personnel and pelted stones at them. The security personnel also fired tear gas shells to disperse the agitated mob.

The protesters have been aggressively demanding for shifting of the settlers from Them ïew Mawlong, after which the Meghalaya government constituted a high-level committee to examine all records and documents and to recommend feasible solution to solve to the pending issue of shifting the settlers from Them Ïew Mawlong.
