SHILLONG, SEPT 6: Over 2000 employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) are at the receiving end when they have not been paid salaries for the past 17 months.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, GHADC chief executive member (CEM) Dipul R Marak said that the Council which is facing huge financial crisis would require Rs 80 crore to clear the pending salaries of its employees.
“I have also apprised the chief minister Conrad K Sangma of the financial situation and he has assured to look into the matter,” he said.
Marak along with his KHADC chief Hispreaching Son Shylla and JHADC chief Madonbai Rymbai have jointly paid a courtesy visit to the chief minister who was recently elected as new South Tura MLA after winning the just concluded bye election.
He further said that the present financial crisis has not only affected the 2000 plus employees but even himself and his colleagues MDCs as well.
Asked whether his executive committee would consider reducing the number of staff, Marak however said such decision would only be taken after a meeting to be held with the state government. “We would do whatever is advice to us,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council is having a total strength of 1700 staff while Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council is with only 700.
