Nokma’s son killed by police

TURA, MAR 4: In an encounter at Romba Adinggre near Oragitok village in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills, a 26 year old was killed Wednesday morning. The deceased, son of a village Nokma fell in the line of fire between Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and Meghalaya police. The police had stormed a makeshift shelter of the militants at Romba Adinggre village at around 5 am.

Romba Adinggre village, adjacent to Oragitok is about 25 km from Tura. The deceased has been identified as Sengbath Marak, son of village headman of Oragitok.  “We had information from our source that militants were taking shelter in the village. When our boys raided the village the militants opened fire from a house forcing our teams to return fire. In the exchange of fire Sengbath was killed,” West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh said.

Police said four militants along with the village headman’s son were taking shelter in a house, when it was raided. The ultras managed to escape by opening fire and fleeing into the jungle.

“Sengbath was involved with the armed group because he opened fire on the police team. We have recovered a 7.65 pistol with two live rounds, two magazines, three GNLA demand notes and a detonator from the encounter site,” Singh added.

On reports that Sengbath was a innocent civilian, Singh said “The nokma’s son was part of the group and we have evidence to point to that. We even recovered one GNLA demand note from his possession which is addressed to the Rongram BDO.”- From Our Correspondent
