SHILLONG, NOV 17: Faced with shortage of doctors in the government hospitals, the state government is roping in non-bonded doctors to bridge the demand and supply gap in the health sector. The proposal of the health and family welfare department appointment of eight non-bonded doctors was approved by the state cabinet on Thursday.
Addressing newsmen, health minister Roshan Warjri said, “We have approved the appointment of eight non-bonded MBBS as medical and health officers.”
Asked, Warjri said some of those bonded doctors have refused to join the government health sector after paying the bond money.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma added that there is a policy of the government pertaining to the prescribed amount to be refunded by the bonded students who after completion failed to serve in the state.
On the issue relating to the failure of the bonded doctors to refund the bond money, Sangma said that the government is following up the matter.
Stating that the whole demand and supply gap as far as medical professionals are concerned is the biggest challenge in this country, the CM said that the matter has been taken up with the Government of India.
He however rued that despite having number of medical institutions and establishments yet they have not been utilized to provide medical education.
“Look at the whole assets and infrastructures, facilities created for NEIGHRIMS they are still having an induction capacity of only 50 students per year whereas this hospital should have taken 100,” the CM said while adding that the idea is to take advantage of the existing medical infrastructure top up with few more whatever is required to upgrade them into medical colleges.
