Foreigners issued certificates

SHILLONG, MAY 5:  The Southern Riwar Zone (Shella Area) of the Federation of Khasi – Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has requested to the government to direct the health centres, especially, those located in the border areas to conduct thorough verification before issuing birth certificates.

According to the organization, there have been several complaints against issuing of birth certificates to doubtful citizens such as Bangladeshis in one of the health centre – Ichanmati CHC which is run by an NGO.

The organization recently conducted an inspection in this particular CHC and found out that birth certificates were being issued by the doctor in charge to the Bangladeshis.

“What worries us is that these certificates were issued to non-indigenous people who are suspected to be Bangladeshi infiltrators without any documents to prove whether the beneficiary is a genuine citizen or not,” president of the Riwar Zone Bantyngshain Ryngnga.

The FKJGP has issued warning to the doctor to stop such issuing birth certificates to those who fails to proof their identity as the local inhabitant of the area.

Ryngnga, however, expressed shocked over the order of Sohra Civil Sub-division directing the CHC not to deny birth certificates to anybody who applies  in the centre. He said, “Such order is irresponsible taking into account the proneness of the area to illegal infiltrators and that it will only worsen the influx problem the state..

Meanwhile, the organization has decided to call a meeting of different village dorbars to discuss the issue.- By Our Reporter
