Nongrum all set to join VPP ahead of 2023

SHILLONG, JULY 22: The lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum has decided to join the Voice of the People Party (VPP), a newly floated regional political party in the state ahead of the upcoming 2023 assembly elections.

Addressing newsmen on Friday, Nongrum said the decision was taken after the VPP under the leadership of former Nongkrem legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit had agreed to include the issue of reservation policy as one of its agendas in the election manifesto.

“The VPP has agreed that there is a need to review and revamp the reservation policy of the state. The intention is not to bring any communal feelings among the Khasi and Garo people,” he said.

He said it is high time that the carry over which is applicable to only one community should be done away with.

Nongrum has decided to quit the KHNAM after there was too much infighting within the party.

He had earlier stated that he is willing to join the BJP if they are willing to implement the ILP in Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, Nongrum assured the people of the state to ensure those running a “high level” will be taken to task if VPP is voted to power in 2023.

“What is that high level? We will ensure all those who are part of the high level will be punished as per law if people give us the mandate,” he said.
