TURA, MAR 14: The supporters of National Peoples’ Party led Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) on Monday staged a demonstration in-front of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) against the state government’s decision to recommend Selma D. Shira, a Congress worker as nominated MDC.

On Friday, Mukul Sangma led Congress government had decided to recommend Selma D. Shira as nominated member of the GHADC without considering the recommendation of the executive committee of the district council, who had proposed Conrad Sangma’s name for the post.

The anti-Selma protestors termed the decision of the state government as “murder of democracy” and a direct violation of GHADC constitution, which clearly states that that executive committee recommends the name for nominated member for the council, which is approved by the state government and is given a nod by the Governor of the state.

The protestors shouted slogans against Selma and have sought withdrawal of her name. The GHPA has sought for recommendation of Conrad’s name for the said post, as the GHPA had decided to elect Conrad as the chief executive member of the district council.

“The rules of the GHADC are very clear on the nomination of the 30th member and we cannot tolerate the act as has been done by the state government. It is playing with the autonomous nature of the Council. We condemn the act”, said a anti-Selma activist, who took part in the protest.

Making a scathing attack on chief minister Mukul Sangma, deputy CEM of GHADC Augustine Marak said, “The move of the government is nefarious in nature. The CM is well aware of the rules of the GHADC and the move to still push Selma’s name smacks of a design to topple the current executive committee of the council led by NPP”.

He also said that the intention of the Congress government speaks volume about its evil political desire.  “BJP led NDA is in power at the centre. However, it has not shown any interest to topple the government in Meghalaya. Why is the Congress trying to topple the executive committee of the district council?” the deputy CM asked.

He informed that a formal complaint would be registered with the Governor against the move of the state government.  “We are preparing the presentation as the final decision will rest on the Governor of the state, who is the head of all autonomous district council”, he added.

Terming the interference of the Congress party in the affairs of district council, Augustine said, “The interference of the state in the affairs of the GHADC is bad. The timing of such interference is worse. There seems an obvious attempt to topple the GHPA”.-From Our Correspondent
